Frequently asked questions

Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?
No. The whole conversion runs in your browser. The PDF is rendered and the AVIF is encoded on your device, and nothing ever leaves it. You can confirm it in your browser's Network tab.
What is an AVIF file?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format that delivers much smaller files than JPG or PNG at similar visual quality. It's ideal for the web, where smaller images load faster and use less bandwidth.
Will AVIF open on my device?
AVIF is supported by current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, and by many image viewers. The conversion itself works in any modern browser. The AVIF is created by a built-in encoder, so your browser doesn't need to support AVIF to make the file, only to preview it.
Why does converting take a moment?
AVIF uses advanced AV1 compression, which is more computation-heavy than JPG or PNG. The encoder runs entirely in your browser, so a high-resolution page can take a few seconds. That's the trade-off for much smaller files.
What do the resolution and quality options mean?
Resolution (DPI) sets how many pixels each page becomes (72 = screen, 150 = standard, 300 = print). Quality controls AVIF's compression: High keeps the most detail, Low makes the smallest files.
Should I use AVIF, WebP, or JPG?
AVIF usually produces the smallest file at a given quality, WebP sits in between, and JPG is the largest but opens practically everywhere, including in decades-old software. Pick AVIF when bandwidth or page speed is the priority and your audience is on current browsers, and JPG when the image simply has to open anywhere. Can I convert only some pages?
Yes. Choose “First page”, “Last page”, or “Custom range” and type page numbers and ranges separated by commas, for example “1-3, 8, 11-end”. Use a hyphen for a range and the word “end” for the last page.
Why did I get a ZIP file?
When your selection produces more than one image, the AVIF files are bundled into a single ZIP so you get one download. Converting a single page gives you a plain .avif file instead.
Is there a limit to how many pages I can convert at once?
Yes. Because the whole job runs in your browser's memory, a single conversion produces up to 100 images. AVIF is also the slowest format here to encode, so for a long document convert a page range at a time, or lower the resolution.
